Sons Of Freedom- s/t (1988)

For a brief, shining moment, Vancouver's Sons of Freedom (named after the nudist sect) were absolutely the loudest thing in all of Canada and their debut album featured enough volume and metallic crunch to attract the attention of Los Angeles label Slash. It wasn't precisely heavy metal, though, as it contained a lot of fierce punk snarling, in much the same manner as labelmates Faith No More did at the time. Unlike Chuck Mosley's yelping bark, however, the Sons' Jim Newton actually sang somewhat (though his voice was still the point of much debate). The first three tracks of the album are near perfect, and most of the rest of the album comes pretty darned close. One of the high watermarks of Canadian music, the album still sounds fresh and challenging today.
Probably the best album you've never heard.

I note that no-one has left a comment since last weekend, so I thought I would download this one (the 23 people before me should be ashamed for not saying thanks?!?!). Not my cup of tea, but thank you for the post to be able to make this conclusion. I think I might try a Dark Angel album whilst I'm here (they were about when I was teenager, but I never listened to them)

Many thanks

Nick

BTW - FZ is the best band you never heard.

I definitely hear early FNM in the music, but the vocalist kinda sound likes he should be fronting a mid 90s indie band from the UK. However, it is definitely a grower and I like it!!!

Nick: I agree, need more comments! Especially on this post...
FZ? Tell me more!!! :)

anon: The lead singer did kinda have a British accent. Maybe he was from England, even though the band was formed in Canada.

thanks for the comments!

D: Glad you like. That's what my blog is about, finding something you never even knew existed before :)

Nick: I used to be in Frank abit, my brother has a bunch of lp's but I was more of a Hendrix type of guy. One of these days I'll get back to Frank though ;-)

I read somewhere that it was FZ that introduced Hendrix to the wah wah pedal. Hendrix is good

THANK YOU!
I've been hunting for this EVERYWHERE.
OK; I was an idiot to sell the CD long time ago...
I'm from Van, and I used to work with Newton (the singer) at A&B Sound. Yes, he was English. I've seen SOF many times, and many times wished they made a live album, as that's where they really shone. They were always an awesome solid show, with a kick-ass soundman(Dave -Rave-Ogilvie, maybe) Probably the coolest gigs were either w/ Helmet, at Graceland. Or with Images In Vogue (pre-Skinny Puppy), and Jim Cummings art-guy, at The New York Theatre. (it's a Hindu theatre now) Other than Salvador Dream later, the only real-good, heavy and loud guitar band from Vancouver.

Now; you wouldn't have the 2nd album would ya?
